Going down fighting....

I have the start of a cold. Have already hit the Lemsips and have luckily been having a fair supply of fresh fruit over the last week too.

This is a week which i could do without coming down with even a HINT of anything as I'm off to Germany on business on Wednesday until Saturday afternoon. Saturday night sees me at the London New Model Army gig and then Sunday I'm working all day at SELWG (a wargames convention down in Crystal Palace). So I really can't afford to feel less than 100%.

Anyone got any quick-fix/deterrant ideas that might help?

Ginger herbal tea, lemon juice & honey. Always makes me feel better when I've got a cold. Of course Tequila/Whiskey/Southern Comfort works as a emergency 24hr remedy but it'll leave you really dead for the day after that.

Haven't really got much advice re: colds to give, but I wanted to say is that if you fancy some pre-gig drinks on Sat, me and number of people you may know will be convening in the George at some point in the afternoon

I think I'm getting into Heathrow about 4pm on Saturday. I'll have to get home, dump bags/shower and then head out. I will aim to get to The George before the gig but NMA will probably be on stage at around 8.15 I'm guessing as it's the Astoria again. Not sure if I'll be able to pub it afterwards as I'll more than likely be knackered from the previous week plus have to be up about 6am on Sunday to go to work at another Con. I'm really looking forward to the following week! :p

Ibuprofen will stop up any aches and pains, and as old fashioned as it may be, vics vaporub will clear up residuals on the head, leaves strange smells, a small price to pay :)

Yay ginger tea!
Yep, the ginger will burn nasty out of you in very quick order. You have two options:

1) Go to a herbal shop or your larger Asda store and ask for some Dalgety Caribbean Honey and Ginger teabags.

2) email me at the pwca at blueyonder dot co dot uk account with your address and i'll send you my spare pack!

[btw, i'd recommend the latter :) ]

Avoid lemsip, it's over-priced paracetamol that tastes nice. Better to use paracetamol.

Others have mentioned gingery, lemony, honeyey drinks. I concur. Don't be fooled into using stuff that just tastes of the aforementioned ingredients though. You need to use them, in vast quantities. Here's my preferred combo:

Makes one cup:
One inch chopped root ginger OR one teaspoon powdered ginger
Two *tablespoons* honey
(At this stage also add more spices if desired, 6 cloves can be tasty)
Add hot water to the above to 3/4 fill a cup
Add concentrated lemon juice to fill the rest
If too lemony to drink, add more honey

Better yet, substitute some of the honey and hot water for a dash of Suma Concentrated Apple & Blackcurrant Juice.

The above will give good symptomatic reduction, but can't necessarily stave off the cold itself. It will make you feel a lot more human though.

If you want a quick fix, and have 48 hours to spare, try this:

Eat loads of spicy food all day -- hotter the better. In between meals (preferably at least 2 hours after each meal, and half an hour before) drink loads of water (at least 3 litres over the course of the day).

In the evening, gently heat 1 ounce of elderflower and 1 ounce of peppermint in 1 litre of water. Cover the pan and slowly bring to simmering point. Simmer for 20 minutes. Drink the liquid over the course of the evening (sweeten with honey if desired, it doesn't taste that great).

Drink more water.

Go to sleep wrapped up as warm as you possibly can -- e.g. 3 sleeping bags.

Sleep for 24 hours or so.

Wake up fully recovered.

The above has worked for me, but I'm not a doctor and so can't say if it might be harmful or whatever. :p

Echinacea tea (especially nice when mixed with chinese green tea)!!!! It is sooo much better than anything ever (including lemsips and stuff like that), keep drinking it and the cold will be gone in a day or two! it works for me anyway :) :)
For really bad cold-ick, take some antihistamines and some ibuprofen too...
And if you have a cup whenever feeling slightly wonky, it perks you up again :)

shiloads of orange juice, or pineapple juice, you're body can't retain Vit C, so keep the levels topped up. Good amounts of sleep too.

See you at SELWG then!
