X-Men 4 vs Lost? Dr Who vs Heroes?

News from both the small and big screens...

Josh Holloway (who plays Sawyer in Lost) is being strongly tipped to play Gambit in the next X-Men film. He was originalyl due to take up the role in X3 but couldn't because of TV commitments. The X-Men producers liked Holloway so much they scrapped plans for Gambit to appear in X3 as he couldn't play them but things are looking up for the next installment. Holloway's inclusion could prove a good move too as the X-Men rooster is changing a fair bit from the earlier films as several actors - most notably Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, and Ian McKellen (ok, so not an X-Men but still a very important character as Magneto) - will not be returning for the fourth installment. I'm looking forward to seeing the final line-up for this one. Hopefully they'll manage to keep the Beast, Colossus and maybe try and lure Nightcrawler back. Without Jean Grey or Storm they'll be needing higher profile female characters too - maybe Shadowcat and Rogue will get bigger parts. Maybe some new female X-Men will appear. But who? They've already used Jubilee and Psylocke in other roles in the films. Maybe Dazzler (I was always a Dazzler fan). Who would you like to see?

Next story is that Christopher Eccleston is set to return to the small screen in another 'genre' role. He may have left the Tardis and Time Travelling behind him but he's now developing superpowers all of his own and joining the cast of the smash-hit US superhero series 'Heroes'. No news as to who he'll be playing but apparently the smart money is on Syler - the shows mystery serial killer who has yet to actually be seen.

Xmen without _all_ the main characters....

Hmm, that'd be like highlander without Connor, no wait, they did that and it sucked.

Maybe it'd be like the league of extraordinary gentlemen without the league?

Got an idea, how about star wars without the stars, possibly without the wars...

*sigh*

No, Wait!, how about the Hobbit film without peter jackson...Oops, no, wait, they're going to do that as well, and curiously enough, it's going to suck.

The problem with the X types is that you need the ones with the cinematic powers, don't get me wrong, I loved Kelsey Grammar as beast, inspired choice, but it's not a very exciting or cinematic power, likewise colossus, shadowcat, can't have rogue because she's got no powers, Iceman is good if they make full use of him, but you won't have anything like the walking lightshows that are Marvel Girl, Cyclops, and Storm. And then there's bad guys, you have to keep upping the ante, so the only bad guys left above magneto and dark phoenix are things like mr sinister and apocalypse, and taking on any of them without the team leaders (that'd be all the missing ones) is asking for all the fans to desert the franchise (which very nearly happened with Vinnie "Jaagggaaaanaaawwwwttt" Jones)

Sorry, happen to think that they could have done a lot more with X3 than they did (get the hint people, wait for brian singer to come back).

Brian Singer was offered X4 but has turned it down in favour of Superman 2 and the possibility of doing the Wolverine movie.

If it's "lightshow" powers people are after then I'd imagine dazzler would be a very good choice. Possibly recruit Firestar to the team too (although she was never an X-Man).

Certainly the core of the team are now killed off or out of contract. It'll be interesting to see how they proceed.

Ergo, Xmen without the Xmen, no good.

Look at the choices they've got, Polaris (rip off Jean Grey), Havok (Rip off Cyclops), Cable would be a good character, Garrison Kane (second degree wolverine) would be good, Rahne sinclair would be good, but you're into the realms of non-X men then, and then the fan base starts to wane off and the rest of the world isn't too bothered when the big names are no longer in there...

Actually I can imagine Josh Holloway as Gambit really easily ... I think he'd be an inspired choice! Hopefully they'll aim to start X4 with a completely/mostly new team, as it needs to feel a bit fresher than X3.

Yeah, but they'd need to pull the same level of film as X1, which would be hard to do, especially after the homicidal antics of the last director...

The lack of Storm (or any other strong female lead) is not good, the lack of Halle Berry is a GREAT thing - she was terrible. Perhaps she might learn to act one day rather then relying on pouting, but I doubt it.

I heard recentlt (unsubstantiated 3rd party say so) that it was Wolverine movies - plural. A set up one and a second being Wolvie's big trip to Japan as the second.

Sadly, I think they've cast Sylar, and I think it's not him.

Retorical question : Was I the only one who thought X-Men 3 was rubbish? (I know I wasn't as the 5 people I went to see it with all agreed). Anyway, as several people have said considering all the significant adult characters (bar Nightcrawler and Beast) aren't going to be in this one we may end up with, horror of horros, Teen X-Men - The Movie...

I hope Sylar doesn't turn out to be CE as yet another British bad guy is getting ridiculously passe. alobear and I have already counted up to 15 "powers" in the show already so any more is going to get ridiculously confusing.

Oh, and interesting to see the Josh Holloway / Gambit thing being re-spun. Last time I read about that he'd turned it down as he didn't want to be type-cast as another charming / violent Southerner...

Nope, you're quite right, X3 was a very poor offering. Not as bad as Superman Returns, thought evidently Brian Singer is not as infallible as the fanbase like to imply.

No you're not the only one! I thought it sucked majorly, except the bits with Beast.
