Victorian Tatoo'ing

I was surprised to learn how popular Tattoo'ing was amongst the Victorian Elite and society. A number of European Royality sported tattoo's apparently.

Anyone reccommend a good book, or website, that deals with Tattoo'ing in late 19th Century Europe? Looking at it more from the social aspect than the art and design aspect (although obviously I'd like to see imagery of the deisgns and artwork used).

Cheers, A

You working at the moment or looking for a brief writing job (that doesn't pay well but does pay :p)?

If you've already worked on tatooing history in the Victorian Era I might have a small commission for you. Mail me off-LJ and I'll see if we can work something out :)

Rosie has also got a number of books on the subject too so I can dive into those for some research. Plus delve the depths of her mind with questions.

I knew my friends would know about this subject! :p

I've got a variety of Skin Shows books and also spiritual tattooing, also my books on early burlesque my have clues in the right direction.

A lot of women with tattoos would also be associated with carnival folk and travelling shows at the Fin de Siecle.
I can give you the email address of one of my university tutors who specialised in Late Victorian Fiction (and also feminist works) - she may be able to point you in the directions of fiction that mentions women with tattoos.

I've also got books on tribal tattoos which were recorded by discoverers travelling the world. The link between polynesia, Mauri and Japanese tattooing should be quite prominent.

And how come you offer other people low-paid writing jobs but not me?! Bastard. :P

Actually, check out the posts here:

https://listserv.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/wa-iub.exe?S2=VICTORIA&q=tattoos&s=&f=&a=&b=

It's the archive for the mailing list. These are all the previous posts with 'tattoos' in them. If you still can't find anything useful, let me know and I'll ask the list (it's not good etiquette to ask about something that's already been covered).

There's a great book called 'Bodies of Subversion'. It's mainly about women and tattooing, but it has a lot of fascinating info about Victorian ladies tattooing.
