I went and saw The 300 this evening with Rosie. I usually don't do evening trips to the cinema - especially when a film has just come out (today was it's first proper release screening here in the UK). The cinema was packed. A far cry from last Saturday when we went and saw Outlaw first thing in the morning and were the only two people in the entire screen! I'm just glad we got in early and got decent seats!

Anyway, you can't take The 300 seriously. I know it's been getting a load of people's nerves up due to 'historical inaccurcies' but it's not historical in the slightest. You don't even have to see the fantasy mutants to know that! I'd certainly call the film a fantasy comedy gorefest.

Fantasy - Because it is a fantasy film for all intents and purposes.
Comedy - Because you can't take it seriously and it has actually got some very good lines in it.
Gorefest - Because, well, it's 300 against 1 million and the 300 do pretty well. You decide how bloody it is eh?

Overall I did enjoy the film. I liked the style it was filmed in and the use of colours. Frank Miller's other film adaptation - Sin City - is still my favourite of the two. The 300 is good but not great. I'm really glad I saw it but I really don't know if it'll end up in my Top Ten this year. It would be one I'd watch again though at somepoint in the future.

School Report: B (Good but not overly compelling viewing)

I know what you mean about empty cinemas. I went to see a film with a girl I was currently going out with. We walked into a 400 seater cinema, totally to ourselves and decided that a bit of a kiss and a cuddle on the back row would be fun before the film started.

We had been snogging away for a few minutes when ONE man, alone, walked in to see the film. Not a problem thinks me. He has 398 seats to cheeose from...Guess which one he chose...The one NEXT to my GF on the back row...TWAT!

I pointed out that if he didn't move he was very likely to get a cinema seat shoved up his arse!

He seemed offended...can't think why!

Ahh, I saw this film yesterday too.

I have to disagree on two points:

it's not really a comedy in any sense of the word - that isn't it's intention, but it is entertaining without recourse to any need for historical accuracy certainly;

it's not a gorefest - it has some great battle scenes and lovely long panning pieces of fight choreography, but they are not in any sense gory. People do lose limps, heads, etc, in battle, but the film doesn't overdo or focus on the blood. In fact the force of the heart pumping blood is if anything underplayed when heads/limbs are lost. It could have been a lot more graphic - but it wasn't. There really wasn't much blood for a bloody battle.

It certainly is:

not historically accurate - it is fantasy - it's an entertaining story adapted from a comic/graphic novel and doesn't pretend to be anything else. There are some oversized elephants, rinos and people that are too large too be realistic.

filled with some lovely battle pieces, some entertaining and good dialogue to endear you to characters or vice versa.
