I seem to have a weight problem

...in that my 'check-in' allowance seems impossible to meet with the amount of things I'm having to take to the States. I'm thinking of not taking any clothes and just buying some over there as it's so much cheaper in the US and cuts the weight I need to take down.

Either that or paying whatever the excess weight charge is...

No brilliant suggestions here on buying in the US vs. baggage. I know that more often than not, particularly on international flights, they aren't too strict on the weight limits, but then other times they are... so it's dangerous to assume you can take extra.

They very seldom weigh your carry-on, though, so if you can put heavy stuff in there, it might help. Not so fun to carry around with you, but doable if you're really in a crunch.

Already ahead of you on that one :p

Yeah, a friend of mine (American, but who's done a lot of traveling in more "questionable" countries) got hit by that. They photocopied his journal and took his thumb drive for about 2 hrs. The govt has been known to put various tracking software on computers and such, so it's somewhat... unsettling.

Oh, and kudos to Angus for the carry-on thing, and good luck with the baggage weight.

I've been hit with that problem when I was going to Japan. I think the weight restrictions there may be more than the US, but don't quote me on that. Either way, I decided to try going with just carry on (which is even worse). On the way out I made sure it met with regulation weight and then used my pocket-waistcoat to carry lots of excess. It made me feel a little like the Mitchellin Man, but it was worth it. However, coming back I had bottles of sake, lots of bits of paper, and more importantly an incredibly heavy Mah Jongg set. It was quite the feat walking around pretending it didn't weigh a thing and wasn't cutting into my shoulders or straining my back. They never bothered weighing, but I guess you never know...
