Popular Interests.....

I've just been looking through LJ's most popular interests listing as part of my 'explore Live Journal as a Paid Member' kick.

'Music' tops the list with 912581 members listing it as an interest. Second in the chain is 'movies' with 599039 with another big fall to 'reading' in third place on 387814. But there are some which surprised me as I've no idea what they are, or why they are so popular?

taking back sunday - 111565
dashboard confessional - 88865
thursday - 83871 (what's so good about Thursdays?)
coheed and cambria - 59320 (???)
death cab for cutie - 54854
the postal service - 52881 (are you MAD???)
switchfoot - 32462

I'm presuming a number of the above are bands but I'm surprised I've never heard of them considering so many people list them!

At a guess, I'd say it was due to the majority of LJ's users, whom we have little or no contact with. It's the blog tool of choice for teen Americans, so I suspect they're mainstream American bands. Given the huge divide in pop between the two countries, and our relative distance in age from the majority, the ignorance isn't a surprise.

Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, and Coheed & Cambria are Emo bands. *shudder*
Dashboard Confesional are a christian pop-punk act.

Fascitnating, I'd assumed "Taking Back Sunday" was connected to a Christian quest to get everything fun and useful banned one day a week...

"Deathcab for Cutie" and "Switchfoot" are definitly both bands but I have no idea what style.

If there others are emo that's cool - more stuff for me to look up. ;-)

What really gets me about this sort of thing is how, like all dating-agency-crap, it's so generic. If you've ever signed up for any online dating things you'll know the majority of people put stuff like "I like movies, walks by the sea, TV, quiet nights in and wild night out" and, yes, that really differentiates you from the other 10,000 people on the site. Mind you, the stuff I put on "roleplaying, sci-fi media, etc" makes me stand out but usually in an "oh my god run away" kind of way. :-)

Hate to dash your 'uniqueness' but both RPGs and Sci-fi are rated up there as are a whole load of other 'special interest' interests.

Of course all it means is that LJ is inhabited by tens of thousands of geeks - but we knew that anyway :-p
