The 4400

Has anyone seen 'The 4400'. Apparently it was released last year and by the sounds of it was probably a TV series (it being over 6 hours and all...).

Just read a synopsis of the plot and it sounded fairly interesting. I've also seen it advertised in a few places across my regular shopping sites so thought I'd check in here with you guys for any comments?

"Over the past fifty years, thousands of people disappeared. On July 11, they're back...

Suddenly and inexplicably, 4400 missing people are returned all at once, exactly as they were on the day they vanished. Unnerved and unsure of the implications of this event, the government investigates the 4400 to uncover where they've been and why they've been returned. It becomes apparent that the individuals have not aged or been harmed in any way and have assumed paranormal skills that they did not previously possess.

The 4400 is a thought provoking and superbly constructed series of stories following the 'returnees' as they attempt to resume normal life once more. The dramatic content of each beautifully filmed plotline is enhanced as the discovery of abnormal powers in some of the people begin to generate widespread and unwanted interest, resulting in further alienation and trauma. A young man has the power to restore life or bring about the onset of death in people ; a young girl has the ability to see in to the future and a pregnant woman carries an unborn child that may unlock the secret to the universe..."

It was on SkyOne in December. I knew I couldn't see it all so I didn't watch it. Supposed to be OK. However, it didn't make it through its first season in the US, which is often a bad sign (the major exception being Firefly).

It's starting on Kanaal 2 over here next week, I'm actually quite looking forward to it.
It's a mini-series, I believe it's 6 episodes of an hour.

Mate at work has been enthusing about it, it's only £20 in woolworths. I must say I've been tempted.

It was okay. We missed the series finale, so don't know how the first series ended.

Check http://www.the4400.com/flash.htm - there is an announcement of a new series this summer, so it looks like it's been reprived.

Sounds like a low-key rip off of Rising Stars.

Also sounds like Things Unborn, a rather good book about people returning from the dead. Basically, nasty bomb used, universe assumed to be disrupted, though they don't know how or why. Upshot is that people who died adult but early keep reappearing all over England (can't remember if rest of world is affected) wherever they died.

Best part - Marble Arch was built on the site of Tyburn Cross, a gallows for hundreds of years. So they have built a wall around it and keep a guard over it, because some real nasty characters have reappeared there.

Other nice touch - King Richard II (the one vilified by Shakespeare) has been picked as king. There are earlier kings around, but they've been persuaded not to contest the throne. It's easier to have a nice forward-looking monarch who understands how to work with Parliament than, say, Charles I.

Hmm...might pick that book up. Sounds fairly interesting.

Claire and I enjoyed it enough to watch it when it was on.
Very much 'sci-fi for non-scifi fans'.
So it doesn't go very deeply into the questions it raises.
The idea was nice, but it seemed very much like something they wanted to make a series of and couldn't get the money for.
The middle bits are like series episodes, and the first and last are like a mini series.

The truth of it is rather a good idea,
but it is left open for a second series which is a pain
as it is not as conlcusive as it ought to be.
Many things are not explained, which is annoying in a mini series.
Better than Hex, not up to Desperate Housewives.

Looking forward ot 'Point Pleasant' which looks interesting.

Oooh yes!
It'll be available on DVD in Feb I think, maybe March.

I watched a couple of episodes and loved it!
Unfortunately people in the house wanting to spend all the possible free time roleplaying meant I couldn't watch the rest.
