(News) Email/Texting worse than Marijuana Use and Man makes Mice Hibernate

Workers distracted by email and phone calls suffer a fall in IQ more than twice that found in marijuana smokers, new research has claimed. (Hmmm.... perhaps they should also include LJ checking in that :p)

"Infomania" Worse Than Marijuana (BBC News On-Line; Friday 22nd April 2005)

Mice have been placed in a state of near suspended animation, raising the possibility that hibernation could one day be induced in humans. (I bet those people who paid tens of thousands of dollars to have their heads removed and put into the deep freeze are going to be mighty pissed off when they wake up and find other able-bodied from their own time still wandering around because of this new technique! My mind also wanders to the use of 'hibernation' for both space exploration and also criminal justice....Mind you it seems we may end up smelling like rotten eggs!! :p)

This Weekend Matthew.....

...Is Convention weekend so it's early to bed for me tonight as I've got to be up at 5.30am to be awake, fed, and ready to be picked up by 6.30.

Saturday is SALUTE, a large wargames convention in London. I usually look after the shop when we do conventions but this year I'm doing the show. It's a very long tiring day but quite enjoyable. Salute is one of the very few conventions I'd probably try and attend if I wasn't working there or at the shop.

Anyway, I should return home again about 8/8.30pm and will be looking forward to having a nice bubble bath and ordering take-away food for the first time this week.

Sunday will be a day of relaxing. I may do some flyering if the LibDem leaflets turn up by then but failing that I'm going to go out for lunch with Sarah and (depending on the weather) laze around in the park for a few hours before returning home at a leisurely pace to do some cooking and probably watch a DVD or something.

We'll see gentle reader but no doubt I will be talking to you all again soon.

Take care!

Pope calls upon Spaniards to "resist the law"

Pope Benedict XVI has decided not to ease himself into the role and gone head-first into condemning Spain's government and calling upon Roman Catholics there to be perpared to loose their jobs and not carry out the law. The law in question? Spains government has had the audacity to legalise Gay Marriage and allow Gay couples to adopt.

The head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council on Family (Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo) denounced the legislation as profoundly iniquitous.

New Scientist, Dark Futures and Ebay

Just discovered that new_scientist has an LJ feed so I'm now happy. Thanks to which ever of my friends has them linked as I found them through the friendsfriends page :)

In other news I'm actually going to be very interested to see how old Benedict XVI works out for the church, Catholics of all persuasions, and the world in general. I know between Bush, Benedict, and a whole host of other things going on in the world it isn't a very nice and friendly place to be living but from a historian (and not to mention dark futurist) point of view it certainly falls into the 'interesting times' category. The amount of possibilities it throws up for future timelines and events is amazing.

Anyway, I should be sorting out some of my latest ebay sales (I found a load of old 80's miniature figures still in blister packs and stuck them up on ebay. Some of the packs ended up going for £42 PER PACK!!!!).

Night night!
