(France) Rioting Spreads further and ten police shot

It looks as if the rioting in France has now spread to nine cities plus several districts within Paris. What's even worse is that ten policemen were shot this evening with two of them seriously wounded.

Up until now the rioters have been targeting mainly cars and not people (although one group did set alight a disabled woman getting off a bus a few days ago which certainly didn't help their 'cause').

I can forsee the big problem really hitting if the police do decide to use maximum force and one (or more) of the rioters get killed. Now regardless whether or not some may deserve 'ultimate force' (for instance idiots who go round setting on fire disabled people) if a single rioter gets killed the violence will only intensify and spread to even more areas which are currently unaffected.

I hope things get sorted soon. If the current level of violence carries on over the next few days then France will have a really serious problem and the initial reasons for the rioting will not be the impetus any further. Added to that it's a long weekend in France next week as Friday 11th November is a National Holiday. If the riots continue Monday through Wednesday you can be guaranteed they'll get even worse over a three day break :(

(France) Muslim Leaders in France Issue Fatwa Against Rioters

Muslim leaders of African and Arab communities have also issued a fatwa, or religious order, against the riots.
"It is strictly forbidden for any Muslim... to take part in any action that strikes blindly at private or public property or that could threaten the lives of others," the fatwa by the Union of Islamic Organisations in France said.

French Violence Hits New Peaks (BBC News Online; Monday 7th November 2005)

Also the first fatality since the rioting started has now occurred. A 61 year old man has died after being in a coma last week. His injuries were sustained by being hit over the head by masked rioters when he went outside his block of flats to check on the bins.

Here's hoping tonight will cool things down a bit, but personally I think this is now going to run for at least another week.

London Roomies?

Hi folks, I have a friend who's in a desperate need to move out of her current lodging. I'm going to ask around some of the non-LJers I know too but thought I'd toss it up amongst the pigeons here as well.

From what I can tell she's housetrained and has two cats which would preferrably be able to move with her (although in dire straits I believe she is willing to be parted with them but only realy as a last resort). Location is preferably North London.

Permanent lodging would be ideal but even if you can give her a room for a few weeks/months whilst she manages to sort out something more permanent I'mn sure she'd be interested in hearing from you.

If you think you can help please either leave a comment, email or text me and I'll pass it along.

Email Emergency (or F**king Mozilla Thunderbird)

I am in dire need of help.

Mozilla Thunderbird has just decided to completely reset itself on my PC. Thus I have lost every single email I have.

Now whilst the Intray had about 90 mails currently in it my entire sub-folder directories had considerably more and some very, very important emails and documentations. I've also lost my entire address book.

Now (without panicking just yet) I know someone mentioned once that your computer keeps a back-up directory under some weird and wonderful code that geeks can access.

Well, I'm in dire need of a geek that access it.

Please get in touch with me if you think you can help. I'm at home all day Wednesday and have Thursday evening free too if you need to come over to help (ie - if it's too complicated to do over the phone). I will reimburse you for your troubles.

Whilst this is the first time Thunderbird has screwed up on me I've had Mozilla Firefox reset itself numerous times (let's face it - loosing email is a lot more of a problem than loosing your 'Favourites' list and browsing history). I am in very good mind to give-up on Mozilla products and return to Outlook and IE as I never actually had any problems with them before.

If anyone else if using Mozilla as an email client I'd really suggest making sure all important emails are copied and pasted into Word or somewhere so if your Thunderbird resets itself you don't loose everything too.

I'm off for a smoke in the rain to calm down a bit.
