How to make friends and influence people...

Four United Nations peacekeepers have been killed in an Israeli air strike on an observation post in southern Lebanon, the UN has said.

A bomb struck the post occupied by the peacekeepers of the Unifil force in the Khiam area, it said.

The UN in Lebanon says the Israeli air force destroyed the observer post, in which four military observers were sheltering.

It said the four, from Austria, Canada, China and Finland, had taken shelter in a bunker under the post after it was earlier shelled 14 times by Israeli artillery.

A rescue team was also shelled as it tried to clear the rubble.

"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a UN Observer post in southern Lebanon," Mr Annan said in a statement from Rome.

Old Friend

Netrunning and Uncle Monty the B**stard!

Ok, so the two items in the title of this post have no relation, but it does cover the two topics quite nicely.

Firstly, bill_badger found the following article which just goes to prove to fans of the cyberpunk genre that their way IS the future - Surfing The Web With Nothing But Brainwaves (CCNMoney.com; Monday 24th July 2006). Looks like getting chipped and being able to surf the web - and generally control the computer and may other electronic devices - is no longer the subject of near future sci-fi novels!

Poll #778986 Would you get chipped?

Would you get chipped?

Second on the agenda is the 'Uncle Monty the B**stard!". I was going out tonight but that was cancelled which wasn't the end of the world as I had a load of work to be getting on with. Then ukmonty rang me up and asked if I'd like to join him for a drink after he finished work. Not having seen Monty for sometime I thought this sounded like a fine plan - I could pop out for a couple, see Monty, and then get back home and do some work and also phone Delphine and Alexandre before they go on holiday on Friday. Needless to say that whilst I did limit myself to coke's and coffee's whilst Monty got ever increasingly 'tipsy' it ended up being the whole evening until the pub asked us to come in from the beer garden as they wanted to close it. zenmeisterin also joined us around 9pm (after I'd told her we'd probably have left by then!) and stayed for the duration. Had a lovely night though and it was really nice catching up with both of them :D

I have also decided that The White Lion next to East Finchley station is a very nice pub and should be visited alot more often. It's the first time I've been down there since they refurbished it a year or so ago and it certainly won't be as long before I return! They even played some Nouvelle Vague!!! :D
