GIG 011: Warlock (Doro Pesch) / Raw Deal - Marquee 17/04/89

GIG 011: Warlock (Doro Pesch) / Raw Deal - Marquee 17/04/89
I remember being thrilled, but surprised, that Doro Pesch (whom I think had just left the Warlocks) was playing the Marquee. I was sure she should have been playing venues like the Town & Country Club (which was much larger) so to see her in such an intimate venue was brilliant.

Decidedly very 'Metal' I loved the Germanic sound of her voice when singing as it gave her vocals an extra edge. I can't remember a vast amount about this gig but I certainly remember coming away very content and having really enjoyed it. Raw Deal were completely forgettable though.

GIG 013: W.A.S.P. / Zed Yargo - Hammersmith Odeon 15/05/89

GIG 013: W.A.S.P. / Zed Yargo - Hammersmith Odeon 15/05/89
I think someone may have brought me this ticket for my birthday (which was the following day). IN anycase, I know Justin and Donna where at this one and I think Jason and Jim were too. I remember being pretty close to the back, which was a shame, and also buying a bootleg W.A.S.P. t-shirt outside for some reason (that eventually disintegrated in the wash long before it should have). W.A.S.P. were reasonably good but the support band, Zed Yargo, were dismal.

GIG 014: Clannad - Royal Albert Hall - 17/05/89

GIG 014: Clannad - Royal Albert Hall - 17/05/89
To contrast the W.A.S.P. gig the day before my birthday came the Clannad gig the day after my birthday. An altogether different experience, especially in the majestic Royal Albert Hall.

I'd been a big fan of Clannad for a number of years (independently of them scoring the soundtrack to 'Robin of Sherwood' which was a major TV series for me in the 80's) and it was a dream being able to see them live.

I went along with my father and my parents neighbours (Arnie and Maggie) and can't remember who the support band was. But Clannd themselves were absolutely magical - the dry ice, the way the lights played around through the smoke from the ceiling, the harps, the vocals... everything. Clannad are a great band live. Loved it.

GIG 015: Dawn After Dark / Victims of Pestilence / Creaming Jesus - Marquee 24/05/89

GIG 015: Dawn After Dark / Victims of Pestilence / Creaming Jesus - Marquee 24/05/89
I'd seen Dawn After Dark a few months previously supporting Rose of Avalanche and they had obviously impressed enough to head over to the Marquee to catch them again. I'm very glad I did as the gig introduced me to a band which I ended up seeing a load of times and who always put n a blinding performance - Creaming Jesus.

Creaming Jesus were the first band on the stage (I think this was the only time I saw them supporting as they soon became a headline act in their own right) and were fantastic. A blend of goth and thrash in many ways, but they didn't take themselves seriously (they have great covers of The Cures 'The Forest' and The Sisters of Mercys 'Temple of Love') and had some really great tracks.

In contrast the middle band, Victims of Pestilence, were less than unremarkable, and Dawn After Dark whilst still playing an excellent set still came second best on the night.
