Which Console?

I'm thinking of finally giving in and biting the bullet here folks. But I need YOUR help.

In my pursuit of avoiding doing anything constructive I've decided to buy a console-thingy for a bit of mindless gaming. Thing is I have no idea about these things and am not sure which I should buy. Ergo, I turn to you Dear Readers for advice (foolish of me I know!).

Anyway, it's also an excuse to run another poll......

Poll #465304 Consoles

What Console Should I buy?

Game Cube

Have not really tried any console games but can wholeheartedly recommend Morrowind or WoW for the PC. WoW will eat your life though...
X box seems to be the poison of choice amongst my mates, though.

You can pick any of them up cheap atm with packages of games and then upgrade to the next generation consoles when they come out.

If you are just looking to get one that is to last a long while, PS2 or Xbox.

I have a PS2 with built-in game screen, plus a bunch of games and relevant cables, which I have neither the time nor the inclination to use. Tested as working, one previous owner. Yours for £100 plus P&P.

Sorry for the delay in replying to you. Been caught up with other things. Do you still have the PS2? Which games do you have?

I am semi-interested in buying it. Also, what is the actual model? Could you let me know so I can do a quick search and have a look at it before making my mind up (or even better, do you have a link to a site with a piccy? :p)

Hope the move and everything goes well!

I'm afraid in the interrim I've found another buyer. I've been trying to get rid of it for about two months, since I've got no use to it, and over the past weekend someone finally leaped on it.

Cheers for the well-wishing.

X-Box is made by the Evil Empire(tm), so I wouldn't touch that.

What about the new Playstation Portable? You can even use it as a portable movie or music player and they are just *so* cute.

I'd go for the PS2, because many XBox games come out on the PC and you may well find yourself getting a new one of those soonish. Of course the new generation of consoles (PS3 & Xbox 2) are due out end of the year...

GameCube has more cutesy / kids games than the other two as a percentage.

PS3 end of year don't make me laugh, they have only just got a working CPU, they need at least 12 months hardware and programing development before it becomes a viable platform. Then Software needs to be programed for he PS3, Look at it this way PS3 2006 maybe, if they have the money as they have just lost $96 million (9.6 million of htis went to microsoft.), and may have to pay royalties to a company Microsoft owns 10% of.

I have an X-box, modded so I can us Media Centre, and stream video and music files off my PC, also it's good becasue it links to net radio and Quicktime trailers, so you can watch trailers and video files streamed of your pc.

However their are many good games. Oh and Sony just Lost $96million to a compnay Microsoft owns 10% of. This might mean Soney will have to pay microsoft royalties for every PS2 and game that uses the sual shock feature.

Ah don't you love patants.

It really depends on what games you're interested in.

PS2 and XBox are both great, but I'm totally owned by Halo and Halo 2, so we're now a two XBox household...linked wirelessly for double-blind competition...

By the way:

Hmm, the choices for a first console really are currently between PS2 and the XBox.
PS2 has a wider range of games
X Box has a technical edge

Best Advice [having sold the bastard things back in the day] is to look at the available games and see which platform has more software that you're likely to enjoy

Next generation consoles on the way.

Wait for the PS3

Wait for XBox2 towards the end of the year. It's going to have a year headstart on the next gen PS and Gamecube, as neither will be out until 2006. PC architecture of the XBox means it's significantly more powerful than the other consoles, plus XBox Live! for online play means it has a significant advantage over the PS (rubbish online support, not known if it will be supported for PS3) and Gamecube (none).

Buy something cheap to satisfy your current cravings - and then when I get back from E3 in May I'll tell you about all the lovely new toys I've seen.
