Urban Gaming - The Future

There's been a few articles over the last few months about 'Urban Gaming', kind of a cross between Live Action Roleplaying and a Computer Game. I'm not sure what I think of the idea. In some ways it's a fun new style of gaming that could become very popular, on the other hand it is fairly open for a lot of things to go wrong. We already saw a Chinese man convicted of murder this week for stabbing another player who he leant a magic sword to in a computer game (the player then sold it on-line for a few hundred dollars). But urban gaming involves innocent bystanders who have no idea that they are being used in the game, plus the rivalry between players could overspill in a game where you don't know your opponents....

How does it work? Is it just the Pacman thing?

It seems to vary from game to game, but several of them seem to utilise mobile phone technology and GPS. Pacman is one game that I've heard being played in the States and also over in South Korea (I actually posted a link to the Pacmanhattan site in a follow-up entry to this one).

The following is taken from the 'Uncle Roy All Around You' website (again the link appears in my follow-up entry)...

Uncle Roy All Around You is where the console game breaks out onto the streets; a game that pitches Online Players around the world alongside players on the real streets of the city.

Street Players use handheld computers to search for Uncle Roy, guided by an interactive map and messages from Online Players. Online Players cruise through a virtual map of the same area, searching for Street Players to help them find a secret destination.

Using web cams, audio and text messages players must work together. They have 60 minutes and the clock is ticking...

I've played Uncle Roy All Around Youwhen it was in Manchester. I think it's developed a fair bit more since then, though.

Ah, I was going to post that link, I might just link to your post instead out of laziness. :p

Baba Yaga arrived safely and well, and was very much appreciated, BTW.
