The Day The Bombs Returned to London...

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later and today it seems to have happened.

London of course has been the subject of terrorist attacks all my life. My family and myself have had so many 'close escapes' in the past that I guess we, along with many other Londoners, had grown accustomed to the relatively tranquility that has been the last few years.

My mother and two of my sisters just missed being blown up in the Royal Horseguard attack in the early 80's. My sister and myself avoided the Camden bomb in the 90's be mere minutes and even in quite Finchley we've previously had terrorist assassinations and a few bomb blasts over the years.

Todays attack is awful but it could have been far, far worse. I've had texts off loads of people asking if I'm ok and thankfully I am. The mobile reception is on the blink though as everyone and their dog is trying to use the networks so forgive me if I don't reply.

I've had my family and a number of friends check in and with everyone sounding off their health on LJ I know most of you guys and gals are in one piece which I'm forever thankful.

We'll see how the day progresses but I'm guessing it'll be quieter now. We can certainly expect to see an increase in security, more delays when travelling and a renewed call and support for ID cards now. None of which will of course help because if you really want to blow something up you'll be able to find a way to cause disruption if you have half a brain - and one thing peopel keep forgetting is that terrorist co-ordinators are usually very intelligent and very careful.

The side-effect of todays attacks was with Sarah. She was supposed to be catching the National Express coach from Golders Green to Standstead so she could fly to Amsterdam. With all the tubes out, and then attacks taking place on buses this journey became rather difficult. We ended up having to find a cab company still working/with cabs and drive up there. Luckily the cab turned up on time and the roads going out of London shouldn't be too bad today so hopefully she'll make her flight.

Till later folks....keep safe.

Glad you're okay.

(I was a student in London during 1990-93. Never had any personal close calls, but I do remember the odd wait on the tube while mysterious packages got checked -- and as a student at Imperial College, we always used to joke about how we were just down the road from certain embassies.)

You were the last person on my list that I hadn't heard from - glad to hear you OK. Have a peaceful rest of the day.

Spent most of the morning keeping up to date with developments. Finding/Arranging transport for Sarah to Standstead. Checking in with people and helping housemates check in with their families/friends. Having cigarette breaks in the drizzle outside.

Finally thought I'd better make an LJ post that I was ok after receiving a few texts from people who were worried.

Glad to hear you're ok.

We've also had a number of close calls, both when we lived in London and when we lived in Germany (and the IRA blew up the officer's mess next to my school).

I guess after living in this country for so long with the threat of terrorism its easy to get blase about it all. Coupled with recent peace in the country makes for complacency I guess.

Keep us updated, and keep safe of course!

I actually have the day off today and was originally going to be in London after dropping Sarah off at her coach station. Luckily I also had the day off yesterday and popped in to shop then instead!

hey angus it's belinda (ex finchley person). have you heard anything from melissa or michael?.

glad you are ok.
Jul. 7th, 2005 03:52 pm (UTC)
Hello Ms. Bee! Long time no hear. I heard you'd moved across the pond as Melissa has mentioned it once or twice plus I saw you briefly via her LJ ages ago!

I haven't actually spoken to Melissa as yet. There's a voicemail on her mobile from me but the mobile netowrk over here has been shut down for much of today due to both overcrowding with everyone trying to use it plus security scares (the Madrid bombs were remote activated by mobile phone...).

If I haven't heard anything by this evening I'll probably drop her parents a quick bell just to check.

Take care!

Enjoy the sun and tranquility while you can girl! It's been a drizzly grey old day in London on top of all the troubles.
