Creative Dreaming

Once in a while I'll have a dream that reveals something to me. I learnt the basics of driving a car in a dream once (what the pedals do, how to use the gear stick and clutch, etc....). I've also dreamt up solutions to problems before now as well as ideas/mechanics for games.

Well, last nights dream had me playing a very good superhero adventure card game. I was exploring the mechanics of it and had a lot of fun with it. Luckily enough I remember most of it when I woke up this morning and have managed to jot down the basics already. It looks like a sound concept and system even in the harsh light (or murky grey cloud infested sky) of day. Shall play around with it some more...

I also had a dream where I was attending a gamers/sci-fi convention that was actually held in the future. Think lots of neon lights, chrome and flying cars :) Most of my dream was actually sent in a night-club/bar (typical convention for me then!) chatting to various convention attendees from all over the world (Brazil, Holland, Ireland, etc) and having a great time. I was also very fond of a little Irish girl who did actually remind me of someone (ho hum..). Anyway, woke up feeling like I'd had a wonderful night out (maybe that explains my headache???)

When is Warpcon? October?
Aug. 19th, 2005 10:40 am (UTC)
The last weekend in January :)

You're thinking Gaelcon, which is on in October.

Which reminds me, you work in a gaming shop don't you? Mind if I sent out some of the advertising for Warpcon to you when I have it done? It'll be shiny :)

I always get those two mixed up. Don't believe I can do Gaelcon so Warpcon is in with a good chance. Send me info/links!!!!

I'm happy to put up some flyers/posters for Warpcon in the store.

I wrote a card game back about the start of the year but never got round to doing anything about it. How would one go about producing one? Any idea of what one would ahve to do?

If you want to self-publish there are a number of printers you could use once you've got the art, etc completed.

Or you can try and either license the game to an existing publisher or find a print-partner willing to split the costs.

To be honest it might be worth doing a series of short print runs and selling it at Conventions and on-line to build up its reputation and then looking for a print partner once it has a following. Companies are generally more likely to seriously look at it if it's got a proven record if you're not already an established games designer.

Grim would also be a good person to talk to as he's had experience with creating and publishing a card game from scratch (Hentacle).

Happy to offer any assistance/advice though. Just shout :)

Yes, I got the background for my latest game from a dream/nightmare. The worst part is when the alarm goes off when you're just in the middle of saving the world, rescuing the hostages, or trying to retrieve a worsening crisis. (I don't mind so much when it goes off shortly before the cover I'm hiding behind gets shot to pieces.)

Oh, and as you probably know, Smiths sell packs of 100 blank business cards ideal for trying out card game ideas.

Also a fine game, which I've played a few times.

sorry to be a bore, but is this a subliminal message for you to play Supermunchkin?? Or is this more involved?
Aug. 19th, 2005 11:35 am (UTC)
(Looks at Supermunchkin game on shelf)....hmmm.... haven't opened it yet. Should probably check it out although the game I played in my dream did seemed more involved than the Munchkin series (I've only played the original fantasy one mind you).

Thanks for reminding me about it actually. I've drawn up a list of superhero card games I want to check out to make sure they're not similar and I've just tapped into some generic gamer-consciousness whilst sleeping...

I played Supermunchkin on wednesday, it is the usual entertaining game from the stable, very enjoyable, unless you play with ten people and end up in a vicious circle of the re-usable cards :)

I'm actually pretty sure my idea is quite different. It involves having a Team Leader who gains Hero/Villain points by completing missions which they can then use to recruit other supers to their 'Team', etc.

It was quite fun in the dream. I have to do some mock ups and work out some rules and see if it'll actually work though.
Aug. 19th, 2005 12:12 pm (UTC)
yup. So, it would be designed for both solo, team and adversary play??
Aug. 19th, 2005 01:25 pm (UTC)
Not sure. I certainly 'dream'-played it against other players. When I've worked out the rules properly I can certainly see about solo, team and adversary play though.

It be cool for team-ups, Heroes vs Villains, and solitaire. To be honest their was already a 'villain' mechanic in it but as with many dreams it wasn't too clear about what it was apart from you could pick up villain points and go over to the 'dark side' as such :p
