I really shouldn't laugh but how incompetent do you have to be before you loose your job!!!

Now I know many Americans aren't very good with geography but....

"A South Carolina health official said his colleagues scrambled Tuesday when FEMA gave only a half-hour notice to prepare for the arrival of a plane carrying as many as 180 evacuees to Charleston.
But the plane, instead, landed in Charleston, West Virginia, 400 miles away."
Right City, Wrong State: FEMA accused of flying evacuees to wrong Charleston (CNN.com; Tuesday 6th September 2005)

As I mentioned on anotehr Friends journal - If I currently lived in LA, San Francisco or any other major US city that was prone to Earthquakes, Hurricanes or any other natural disasters I'd be really worried by the response to the New Orleans tragedy. Both the response of the government and also the speed that some sectors of the population broke down into extreme civil disorder (and I'm not talking about people after food but the people who went on gun rampages, rapes, murders and the such like). It also throws into question how ready the US REALLY is for another terrorist strike on its soil. Homeland Security was set up to respond to disasters (both Natural and Man Made) and it has failed in the most awful way in this instance. What would happen if a dirty bomb went off in a major metropolitan area? I guess everyone should just be glad that New Orleans is a small city population wise compared to many others across the country. I really hope heads roll for this and a complete departmental overhaul takes place within Hoemland Secuirty and FEMA.

Oh, believe me, as much as I love Seattle, I'm well aware that I'm on my own in the event of an earthquake, tsunami, or volcanic eruption (let alone hostile attack or terrorist "incident"). This is the best our government can do in response to a situation they could see coming a week in advance?! Holy shit, we're screwed.

On the other hand, The Guardian ran a story yesterday that gives hope that the majority of the "gangs running rampant with guns raping babies" thing was perhaps largely untrue or exaggerated. I'll cling to that hope if I can, it's too depressing to believe we'll inevitably descend into violence in a crisis. :(
