God Help The Kids of America....

....how do American kids cope?

No drinking until they're 21. No clubbing gigging (on the whole) until 21. What do they do? Where do they go? How the f**k do they cope????

If you're not 21 over here you seem to be royally screwed.

I remember coming over here in '94 when we were launching Valkyrie magazine at GenCon when it was still in Milwaukee. I met up with loads of the old Nightfall crew (then actually already part of Wizards of the Coast). Hard drinking Scotsmen. I remember some of them pretty much being confined to their hotels because they couldn't come and party because they weren't old enough. These were guys in their late teens/early twenties who were heavy drinkers!

It's no wonder that I saw a group of kids (punks) down the road from The Viper Room last night gettin g bored and getting in to fights pretty much because they had nothign else to do and no where to go.

We drank at friends' houses, school, wherever parents or law officials weren't.

And, yes, 21 years old is a stupid age to begin condoning drinking.

...and gigging/clubbing.

I went to my first gig at 15 and it steam-rollered after that. I know I still go to lots of gigs but I went to tons before I was 21. Late teens and early twenties is when most people are more active on the band front side and also on the social drinking/developemnt side so stoppong them from doing either does seem very odd.

Mind you I am coming from this as a Brit. In pubs in the Uk you can usually start drinking at 15/16 if you're lucky as many pubs don't ID you unless you look under 18!

Alot of clubs and ggs will be under 21 shows too actually. I know there used to be plenty of them in Portland, (I know I used to go to them), so I'm sure LA has way more.

And as said above, if you wanna drink you do it in other places that aren't bars/clubs.

Or indeed if you do look under 18, as frankly they don't care so long as you're giving them money.

Well remember the number of very open "turning 18" birthday parties at the pub where we'd been regulars for a couple of years. :)

Well, you don't have to be 21 to go to a club or gig. We have 18 and over clubs, plus I was 16 when I went to my concert. So, it's not a complete shut-out.

This is why so many punk gigs are all ages shows. I had seen a couple hundred shows by the time I was 21.

I like to be described as a hard-drinking Scotsman, oh yeah.

He he. Those were the days.

American kids cope by smoking dope/meth/crack.

Um...not really, not all of them anyway. Many just get someone older to buy them beer and hang out, drink and look for fights.

Or play Warcraft/Everquest/someothergame.

Here locally, they drive up and down a single street and stare at each other, then complain how 'cruising' is boring and no one will invite them to the parties (did I mention they do this with either a) their stereo blasting, b) their windows rolled up and/or c) looking like they want to fight?)

Yeah, this place sucks, and from what I understand, most small towns are like this. At least LA has arcades.
