Domain Name

Quick question for you, my dear readers.

I want to know whether you feel .co.uk or .net is better for my domain name.

What are the benefits of .net over .co.uk and vice versa?

Which would you prefer, or look for first? (The .com has been gone for a number of years by a lightning company in the States that just keeps renewing it and never using it so that's out of the question...)

So...

Poll #707009 Domain Names....

What would be a better domain name....?

I do web promotion as a living so I could write you an essay on this :)

If you're hosted in the States and want to appear in "Pages from the UK" in Google UK then its certainly best to go with .co.uk. There may be other ways in which Google can assign you to the UK but they're not online yet.

If you don't care (or if you're hosted in the UK) then .net has that more global appeal. In fact, being hosted in the UK, having a UK WHOIS and being a .net is the closest you'll get to having your cake and getting to eat it.

I would buy both and have .co.uk issue a 301 server side redirect to .net.:)

I've already brought both so that's not a problem. Just wanted some feedback on which to use as the primary URL. I must say that I'm leaning towards .net anyway but will see what the overall feel is.

Many thanks for your comments btw.

I also have some news for you very shortly :)

Ah. I just wanted to ask what you thought about one of the new fancy ones (.info or .biz)

Don't think much of them to be honest. .com .net .org or .yourcountry codes are the ones people will automatically go to as their first stop.

I'm hoping the .eu takes off too.

The .tv .biz or the .xxx they were thinking about I think are currently very third class citizens of the internet.

The way I've always viewed it is that .com is meant for US, .co.uk for the UK. Therefore I always go with .co.uk as it reminds us that we're a British company! Having said that, I do intend to buy a .com address to act as a redirect ...

I guess it's also worth pointing that out since Friday you can buy cubicle7.eu :) Shame you can't have cubit.eu7

.net or .org always slip my mind, or register as "not quick off the mark enough to get a dot.com" or "registered as a free name, probably will suck".
Funny the associations you pick up, really.

I agree with using the co.uk as your main address and the .net as a redirect address. :)
