Blair & Bush's chat...

I'm sure many of you have heard/seen the remarks that were caught on film during a break at the G8 summit in St. Petersburg between Bush and Blair but I thought I'd copy it up here aswell. It's a shame Blair noticed the microphone was on and switched it off as we could have had more juicy gossip and maybe a few elusive knitting tips...

In Full: Bush and Blair's Unguarded Chat (BBC News Online; Monday 17th July 2006)

Bush: And thanks for the sweaters - I know you picked em out yourself...

Blair: Oh yes absolutely - in fact I knitted it!!!

Bush: What about Kofi Annan - he seems alright. I don't like his ceasefire plan. His attitude is basically ceasefire and everything sorts out.... But I think...

Blair: Yeah the only thing I think is really difficult is that we can't stop this without getting international presence agreed. I think what you guys have talked about which is the criticism of the [inaudible word). I am perfectly happy to try and see what the lie of the land is, but you need that done quickly because otherwise it will spiral.

Bush: Yeah I think Condi's [US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice) gonna go soon.

Blair: Well that's all that matters but if you... You see at least it gets it going.

Bush: I agree it's a process...I told her your offer too.

Blair: Well it's only if she needs the ground prepared as it were. If she goes out she HAS to succeed whereas I can just go and...

Bush: You see the irony is what they need to is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this shit and it's all over...

Blair: Dunno... Syria....

Bush: Why?

Blair: Because I think this is all part of the same thing...

Bush: (with mouth full of bread) Yeah

Blair: Look - what does he think? He thinks if Lebanon turns out fine. If you get a solution in Israel and Palestine. Iraq goes in the right way

Bush: Yeah - he's [indistinct]

Blair: Yeah.... He's had it. That's what all this is about - it's the same with Iran

Bush: I felt like telling Kofi to call, to get on the phone to Assad and make something happen.

Blair: Yeah

Bush: [indistinct] blaming Israel and [indistinct] blaming the Lebanese government....

I still say they should just fly a cruise missile through the Israeli governmental building thingie, not with a live warhead, just enough to remind them we're there. Then do the same to the Lebanese and then tell them all "Stop it or else!"

One of the problems is that the lebanese government and army are not actually involved in this conflict - although their citizens are being killed by the hundreds and the Army actually lost ten soldiers yesterday I believe in an israeli airstrike.

The IDF is fighting Hezbollah which is a paramilitary group based in Lebanon who do have a fair amount of popular support (a bit like Hamas has in Gaza although Hamas are now the officially elected government aswell).

Even if the Lebanese goverment and army were fighting the Israeli's the deaths of hundreds of civilians is still not excuseable - even more so the killing of dozens of children so far.

I think it's only a matter of time until the Lebanese Army will strike back at the Israeli's if they keep up their indiscriminate bombing (and there's no way the excuse of 'targetting Hezbollah strongholds' is going to wash with some of their targets in the last few days!). Then it's all out war and I wouldn't be surprised one bit if you see one or more other countries get involved.

And let's not forget, the Israelis have nukes, and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they considered using them.

Consider maybe.

I don't think they'll actually use them. The chance goes up though if Syria and Iran get involved and things start going badly for the Israeli's.

You know, after reading that, I can't decide if their just like us or "oh my god, they run the world"

I'm dying to find out what colour the sweaters were though!

Nice to hear what they really think, though. No one can deny they're all nice and diplomatic now, can they?
