Israel - Lebanon

Saudi Arabia, a major American ally in the region and usually one of the more restrained countries, gives a frank opinion on what could happen in the Middle East if a peace settlement isn't reached with israel next week in Rome.

"Saudi Arabia warns everybody that if the peace option fails because of Israeli arrogance, there will be no other option but war," - King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia

Oh great just what we need, another ME conflict.

Yet another war to buy figures for :( if only that were the least of the worries.

usually one of the more restrained countries

Hmmm, I would say only in the sense that they prefer to give lots and lots of money to other people to fight than actually fight themselves.

The royal family, with one or two exceptions, has supported and profited from one of the most repressive social and religious regimes in the Middle East for decades. It funds the spread of Sunni Islamic fundamentalism overseas. And members of the royal family have been linked to a number of terrorsit organizations. The Saudis are, as a government, bad, bad people opposed to most of the principles that Western democracy and pluralism stands foursquare behind.

But they have lots of oil. And lots of friends in Western governments (especially those that are, like mine, currently infested with lots and lots of oilmen).

I meant vocally restrained about the Israeli situation.

Saudi as a county and dictatorship is bloody awful as far as equal rights, racism and sexism is concerned. My uncle worked there for the best part of 15 years and some of his tales really do not paint the country in a good light.
