Threat Level: Severe

The British government has started a new public Threat Level assessement. Ranging from Low (an attack is unlikely) to Critical (an attack is expected immediately). More info can be found on the UK Intelligence Community Site in their Threat Levels Section which includes how they make the call.

So what are we currently? Well the UK is.....

Which translates to "Tony Blair is getting too much stick on his position regarding Iraq and Lebanon. Quick, we need to make the public worried about the threat these extremists pose to us so they don't complain so much at the heavy handed tactics we, and our allies, are using. Nor will they mind so much as Blair and his government further erode Britain's civil liberties and further turn us into an unofficial state of the United States of Christianity America."

These threat levels are pointless, it's been at (equivalent) of this level for over two years, what do they want us to do, panic constantly? Report anyone whos carrying a slightly bulgy rucksack?

The only higher level is "critical" (and what do we do then? Hide under a table?) and they're very unlikely to change it to anything else with the result.

Shit, man, we Americans have been dealing with Public Threat Levels for years. At least yours uses words instead of colors.

And, yes, they are for exactly what you translated. See also: Bin Laden tapes, terrorist threats, and announcements regarding the last frozen treat coming out of Dairy Queen.

But ours have just been adjusted to the same number of levels as our USA buddies, so now we can have colours too!

Yay! Rainbows of terror abound!

They should rework the colours for how disgusting they are

No terror - Green
Mild terror - Beige
Slight terror - Puce
Lots of terror - Magenta
Run Run Run! - Pink with yellow and green spots, preferably flashing.

And name them using the paint colour naming method

And todays threat level is apple blossom with a hint of Mocha

Actually, we've also had colours here for years. Where I work they have the 'threat level' posted in reception, and it's been 'Black special' for the three and a half years I've been here, barring a couple of days of 'amber' (and possibly a 'red', if I remember rightly) around the time of events last July.

But... haven't we been bouncing between Severe and Critical since September 11th?

It means absolutely nothing anymore.

Aaaaaand this reminds me to mention to Angus that our next schedlued visit to his hutch, might be the end of September some time between the 20th to the 24th.

We will try to get this pre Dragonmeeet visit out of the way as over the DM weekend we will probably be talking shop most of the time.

Oh my God! Clearly I'm at risk as there is a large Muslim community in Aylesbury. I'd better start eyeing them suspiciously, until paranoia grips me completely and I run around screaming at the slightist glimps of a head scarf.

Doh! So that's what the Public threat level is for, to make us feel that it's justified to bring in all these new laws are for, and justify the actions of the gov. And there I was thinking it was to help run the country ;)
