Deadwood (+ meme)

I started watching Deadwood Season 1 this week. It's taken me long enough. I remember it being on telly a couple of years ago and Dave and Sasha watching it and telling me it was very good.

I never doubted them as the bits I saw looked fantastic but I try not to watch TV series on TV as the chances are I won't be able to watch them every week so I'll just be late (as usual) and catch them on DVD. This allows me to watch them at my leisure and also not have to wait a week + between episodes when there are cliffhangers :p

Anyway, I'm five episodes in and I can honestly say the series is fantastic. It's the best TV serial I've watched since Firefly. I've already ordered the Season 2 box set in preparation for when I finish Season 1. It's certainly not for the faint-hearted and I also love how the completely 'unexpected' can happen. Certainly one of the events so far (concerning Wild Bill Hickok) completely blindsided me!!!

Plus it has such an amazing cast (although does anyone else think that Seth Bullock looks like Mike Tinney from White Wolf? It was a bit unnerving to start with! :p).

Anyway, fab series. Plus I found out that Andy P had created a meme for it a while ago so I just had to go and complete it :p

You scored as Seth Bullock. You didn't want to be sheriff, but someone had to do it. You wish you didn't have such a high moral compass, because you just want to sit in the background. However, in this town someone needs to step up, and if no one else will, that only leaves you. If evil only needs the good to do nothing, you won't watch from the sidelines. (Seth Bullock is played by Timothy Olyphant)

We're doing the same. We're up to about episode 16, I think. I'm sort of enjoying it, although I find the script a bit limited sometimes. I mean, can't the fucking cocksuckers find some different insults to hurl at each other? I'm really enjoying Ian McShane as Swearengen: his relationship with Trixie is completely fucked up, and I love Brad Dourif as the Doctor. I scored as him in the meme!

Yeah, the language certainly isn't for the faint at heart. It doesn't seem to lie low at many points either.

It's something that stands out even more for me because I actually don't swear very often and am not (usually) around people who do either. Thus all the fucking cocksuckers are definetly a departure for my ears.

I warned one of my flatmates about it too. Not that I think she'd mind but it is a little OTT. McShane is stunning in his role. But saying that most of the cast seems to have been really well selected for this.

We looked up the real life characters on wiki - some of the likenesses are amazing: Bullock, Sol Star, Swearengen, they're all there, as well as Wild Bill, Charlie and Calamity Jane (who strangely doesn't look anything like Doris Day - there's another childhood illusion shattered!)

Yup. Deadwood is pretty much the best TV series I've seen.

Thank you! I now don't know whether to laugh, or wash out my brain with carbolic :)

The Hickok event blinsided you?

Playing Deadlands I kno a bit about Ameria history, and knowing it was Deadwood, I was waiting for i from episode1.

I was Seth Bullock in the 'meme' also.
The series is just great, but I hold the swearing is unrealistic for the time, despite what the director says.
I do not care about swearing and am not offended, but I am attached to the time and value realism.
