US/USSR Collapse Comparisons

autopope has posted up a very interesting article about the collapse of the USA. It compares the US at present to pre-collapse Soviet Union and I must agree that the people of the Soviet Union were much better prepared for the ensuing collapse than the majority of Americans are. Not least because the Soviets were used to hardships, rationing, etc.

I don't agree with all of the article and I also think that two of the important post-crash problems America will have is the large social/racial divides that exist in most parts of the country along with the religious/political fundamentalism and gun culture.

Anyway, enjoy the article: Closing the "Collapse-Gap": The USSR was better prepared for peak oil than the US (The Energy Bulletin; 4th December 2006)

This is an interesting article, on a topic which I've been following for some time. And where does the UK fit in? Probably somewhere in the middle.

The point about racial divides being a likely problem has already been picked up in the UK - by the BNP (who else?). They're actually trying to make quite a bit of political capital out of the peak oil problem at the moment. They see it as their shot at the big time.

I wonder if such a scenario might hit the UK harder than any other country in Europe, given that successive governments have tied us so tightly to the USA.

If the USA goes down, we go down - in a way that probably wouldn't happen to, say, Belgium, or Sweden, etc.

I do also think that a side-effect of an economic collapse would be a whole load of strife in society, prodded along by the likes of the BNP who never waste an opportunity of saying, 'It's all their fault!'.

Unfortunately this attitude - of blaming them, whoever 'they' might be from time to time, is becoming almost mainstream. Look at the way the tabloid press has almost universally decided that the latest threat to the well-being of olde Blighty is, erm, Bulgarians...
