As part of the celebrations of Stars Wars 30th Anniversary the BBC have been running a series of articles looking back at the movies and the people who made them.

This morning they've posted up Barry Norman's original review of the first film, 'A New Hope', which has provided an entertaining read over breakfast.

That cant be his original 1977 review...

The giveaway is;
"And it has a happy ending in more ways than one. In the first place, Alec Guinness - as a sort of Arthurian Knight - was given such a percentage that he no longer needs to worry, if he ever did, about his old-age pension."

Nobody quite realised the extent of money that Alec Guiness's 2% of Box Office (Or George Lucas's full merchandising rights), nobody quite forsaw just how lucrative these 2 deals were until a bit later.

Mind you, on reflection, its possibly the UK review, a little while after the US release, there used to be quite significant gaps between a films US release date and elsewhere in the world... Maybe it was written in 1978?

Mind you, he was spot on the money, better than his 'confused time-travelling immortals' review for Highlander! ;)

According to this: http://www.mjsimpson.co.uk/starwars3.html Star Wars was released in the UK at the end of 1977, though most cinemas wouldn't have been able to show it until early 1978. By this time, it was already a huge hit in other countries and it would have been clear that Alec Guinness's 2% would make him very rich indeed. I was 10 at the time and remember the huge queues right around the cinema to see it. The level of hype and excitement was similar to that surrounding Lord of the Rings movies.

I only hope financial blandishments won't persuade them to change their minds and cut corners in search of the easy dollar....

...... Well, at least it took quite a while before they did.
