Pet Shop Boys - Hammersmith Apollo

Last night was a blast. I wasn't really sure what to expect but the Pet Shop Boys are a very good and very entertaining live act.

The vast majority of the songs I know from them are from the 80's and only occasionally have more recent songs (Go West for example) entered my consciousness.

Courtesy of a friend I had managed to get a rather extensive guest pass list and ended up going with a bundle of people whom I either knew or were friends of friends. That in itself could have a been a pain but everyone who came along was really sweet and nice and I think we all got along and had a great time. I really enjoyed going in a 'crowd' and also the fact that we all then disappeared off to the pub afterwards for chats (well, all bar two who had to get home).

The Pet Shop Boys had no support band and came on about 8.15 and played through to 10. Apart from Neil and Chris they had three backing singers (two guys and a girl) and a bundle of male dancers. Costume changes were abundant and whilst stage props were minimal those in use were very effective.

My favourite songs were (predictably) the older ones - West End Girls, Suburbia, Paninaro, etc with an absolutely blistering rendition of It's A Sin capping my evening. Excellent gig. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see them as I'm not sure I would have gone if I had to pay £30 for the ticket!

Afterwards we headed off to a pub in Hammersmith and merrily chatted away until two-by-two we left to our various parts of London (or Cambridge). I ended up finally leaving about 12.30 after the pub had closed it's bar, turned all the lights on bright and had stopped the music - yeah, it took a while for the hints to kick in that maybe they wanted to close. So ended up taxi'ing home, dropping off Beckie and then getting back home with the relaisation that the last meal I'd had was a late breakfast and underneath my drunkeness I was actually famished.

Woke up this morning pretty hungover, almost threw up and was 30 minutes late for work. Luckily coffee, water and pills have helped sort me out.

Absolutely cracking night. Many thanks to luciddestiny, syleth, jonny_eol, robinbloke, razornet, kathbad, glamgothruthy, shewho, crookedmonkey & Romana (whose LJ name I can't remember!) for coming along and making it so fun!

We'll have to all try and arrange another night out somewhere! :)

And enormous thanks to you! Brilliant mid-week shenanigans - more of that, I say!!!

Gold Lamme cowboys. Can't beat it with a stick.

Amusingly, I was discussing the gig with my workmates this morning, who mentioned I seemed very perky for someone who was out the evening before. I mentioned that the music ended aorund 10pm, meaning plenty of time for just-one-drink and then home. The assembled masses as the coffee machine nodded sagely and commented that if there was more gigs like that, they'd go out more often.

A passing co-worker of 22 years of age added "you probably even had time for a cup of cocoa and everything". Cheeky.

in short, we'd be on for more of this sort of thing!
