Old Goth Scene

One thing that Facebook (and Myspace to a certain extent) has made me realise is that there are a lot more people out there who remember me from the Goth/club/live circuit scene from the early/mid-90's than I remember them.

There's been a few people who have friended me with memories about how we met who, even once they have told me, I remember the situations (sometimes) but not always the individuals. Now I know I am fairly bad with names, especially years ago when I was a real social butterfly in so many scenes and clubs, but it really does scare me that I've literally forgotten so many people. I can remember faces of people who used to be fairly close friends on The Scene (tm) whom I'd be hard pressed to put names to.

Now I know this is a particularly hard problem with people you only knew through clubs. You'd end up seeing the people all the bloody time and then end up greeting them and even talking to them for months or years and STILL NOT KNOW THEIR NAME!

I remember one time at the old Electric Ballroom Melissa asking me whom someone was (that I always spoke to and who we always used to energetically greet). I had no idea of his name so Mel found an opportunity to get involved in a conversation with him and said "Hi, I'm Melissa, Angus' girlfriend. Who are you?" - which solved both his and mine own problem of not knowing each others name. Sadly I forgot his again by the next club night... but that's my damn memory for you.

I often find it amusing that I've now been actively floating around in the goth scene in London for almost twenty years. My first goth club was The Catacombs in Manor House back in 1988. My first goth gig was Ghost Dance and Rose of Avalanche at the old Town & Country Club in Kentish Town, also in '88.

I remember Kensington Market being the mecca for Goths, with people like Christian (whatever happened to him?) having stalls down there. I remember dying my hair black, wearing petuli oil, loads of black plastic rubber wrist bands and metal bangles, long black flowing coats, make-up, crimping my hair and otehr fashion disasters (or atleast fashion disasters on me :p).

I loved it. Every minute of it. Still do. Guess I'll always be a Sad Old Goth ;p

Not you too!!!!!

Ah, but I was there in '86. Lived so close I could stagger home down the hill. The days before the S'burys etc. Still a shoddy place tho.
And yeah, Kensington Market and the always nattily dressed Christian - what *did* happen to him?
