It's fair to say that I've been a bit worried about the film version of Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" Trilogy. I loved the books and they still rate as some of the best fantasy I've ever read. The ideas and setting was fantastic. The Daemons, the Witches, The Armoured Polar Bears, the Canal Gypsies, Sky ships, travelling between worlds, all of it.

Anyway, I finally saw a trailer for the first film adaptation this evening that made me go 'ooo' in a good way. It shows a lot more of the film than the previous trailers I've seen and it's given me hope that it could battle it's way into my Top Three films of the year. I also loved the daemon bit towards the end of the trailer :D

Someone told me that, since it portrays "The Church" and "God" in a bad light that would get a lot of bad press from Bible Belt America, that they are going to strip A LOT of the references to God and Church and such from the series. Which I can't understand since it is HIS Dark Materiels.

There was talk of replacing the religious aspect with a more corporate aspect.

Saying that, there is a bit in the tariler where Lord Asriel (Daniel Craig) is talking about parallel worlds and he's called a heretic. So maybe they have kept some of the religion in.

I hope so as it was one of the things that really gave flavour to the book and is fairly integral to the main plot.

Yeah. I'd much rather see an end where it's Metatron falling down the chasm, not Bill Gates.

It looks pretty good, I must admit. Kyle and I are half-way through 'The Amber Spyglass' just now, so they are all very fresh in my mind. I'd forgotten, having speed-read the second two books when they were first published, how anti-Church and -God they actually are! It'll be interesting to see how they get away with the second two...The first one is much more of a straight adventure story.

Nice to see one of the many films done where I work, 1 minute 21 seconds is a particularly nice shot of it. I've never read the books, although we have them and I've meant to, so that probably sets me up perfectly for the films!

Think you'll like this extended trailer even more:
