(News) Benazir Bhutto killed

I've been following this story for most of the day.

First was the report saying a suicide bomber had attacked a political rally by the Pakistan Peoples Party which Benazir Bhutto was speaking at. Reports said that she was unharmed.

Then news came through that she was actually injured in the attack and then, within the last 30 minutes, that she has indeed been killed by the attack.

This is certainly not good news for Pakistan as Benazir was one of the few people who could have helped get the country back on track. That was one of the main reasons she was invited back into the country by General Musharraf, even though relations soured between them shortly afterwards.

It's a very sad day for Pakistan stability.

I seriously doubt that Bhutto would have done anything constructive in Pakistan; she was a deeply corrupt politico in government for what she and her supporters could claw out of the public coffers. I wouldn't really say she was invited to come back by Musharraf--more like he realised it would be counterproductive to forbid her to return, or deport her as he did with Sharif, and I think he hoped he could work out a deal by which she got some authority and an opportunity to scrape a few more millions out patronage and kickbacks without interfering in his actually running the country. I don't think her assassination will make things any better, though. :-(

Agreed. It's yet another casualty of the need for news that fits in the average attention span of a TV-trained person. But maybe that's just me being old and cantankerous.

*nods* I found it by accident on a news website when looking for something else and have now got bbc news 24 on. I just hope that people don't use Benazir Bhutto's death as an excuse to make more violence... :(
