Gother Than Thou Question

A few of you may remember a card game that came out a few years ago (2000) called 'Gother Than Thou'.

The original game used photo-images.

I brought the rights of the game early last year and we are now turning our attention towards doing a second edition of it. The second edition will require completely new pictures and my mind is currently pondering whether or not to commission brand new photoshoots or to hire artists to illustrate the cards.

I'll also be looking for playtesters and feedback from people regarding both the current (original) rules and any changes we may be looking at implimenting.

So, faithful readers and friends, would you prefer to see a second edition using photo's or illustrations?

I remember that game. Friends of mine had it. I only ever played it with them once or twice though, so don't know if I formed enough of an opibnion to be much use in discussions on changing/adding rules etc.

For some reason that my sleep-addled brain doesn't want to share with me right now I'm thinking that sticking with photos would be the thing to do.

in the goth world - your always gonna know the people if they where photos, which would be highly amusing - any chance of commissioning rachael huntingdon to do the illistractions - that'd be good...

but i'll buy a game!

Rachel would be the type of artist I was considering approaching should we go down the illustrated route :)

I tihnk any edition which doesn't include a photo of me cannot be called gother than thou, on account of me being goth as fuck ;-)

(Staples hand to forhead) It's not easy having a good time you know.

Seriously though I would be more than happy to help you play test it.

I agree ;p

And think it has to have pics of me in it too - I'm so goth I can get away with being ginger ;p

I'd prefer photos.

I'd love to see some quality caricatures involved, and *clang* might I drop in a shameless plug for a pal:

Rachael Huntington is the bomb.

Meanwhile, would be delighted to play test, perhaps at a Nightmare after party where the spirit of the theme will be greatly appreciated by those assembled.

I'd prefer artwork, and would love to put my name down now, as playtester
I think photos woudl be distractiong.

I prefer illustrations myself, but then again, I might be a little biased... ;)

I like the idea of both.

Didn't they call the original edition "Second Edition"?
Jan. 16th, 2008 03:35 pm (UTC)
No. Well... atleast not on the set I've go anyway :p

The original publishers (Savant Garde) were planning on publishing a new second edition of the game and were running a photo competition back in 2001 before they went under (or called it quits - not sure what happened to them actually).

*laughs* I used to win that game by being the only person who knew the lyrics to 'This Corrosion' - possibly I shouldn't be owning up to that =P

The photos in the original cardgame were fun and certainly worked. I'd be interested to see an illustrative set however. Ms Rachael of gothic fey illustration fame would work very well. Will the set remain monochrome?

Should for any reason you not be able to get Rachael to illustrate the deck, I hereby humbly offer my services as a B/W illustrator. To be honest I have no idea if my stuff is proffesional enough, but I've done various freelance projects in the past, and 'gother than thou' is certainly my style =)

I think I'd prefer to see illustrations. You can't get Kovalic, can you?
Jan. 16th, 2008 04:21 pm (UTC)
I just reckon you use 50 self portraits :P

Hey I vote for doing a photoshoot with all your friends trying to outgoth each other in a graveyard somewhere (theres a nice one in Stoke Newington) and then go for beer! (Or absinthe or blood if you insist on being gother than moi)

We did something similar for a flyer for Goddess, and it was the most fun I've had with my clothes on for years.

For a different style of artwork again, I'd like to recommend Muted Faith as she has rather ethereal style, although it can very quite dark and goffik when she puts her mind to it. :)

I remember that game! We used to sell it at the goth/industrial music store I worked at. Good times, it was. :)

I say go for both photos and illustrations, and maybe even Bradstreet-y "photo drawings"? Of course, the photos if done right could really work... I'm just more of an artwork kinda guy.
