Holland vs Russia

Well, as much as I hate to say it, the best team won.

Holland had, for me, been the best team of Euro2008 so far and I reckoned on them getting through to the final and probably winning it.

But on the night Russia outplayed them completely and so deserved the 3-1 victory they've walked away with. They didn't let Holland rest, were always on the attack and seemed to desire it so much more than there Dutch counterparts on the pitch. Even at 3-1 up with a few minutes of extra time remaining, when they had it in the bag and most teams would just time waste, Russia was attacking the Dutch goal.

I thought it was a cruel blow when Holland equalised with about 5 minutes of regular time to be played. Even though they were the team I had started the evening rooting for. But you can't deny Russia their rightfully deserved victory this evening.

Poor Marco van Basten (Coach of Holland) looked shell-shocked. Whilst Guus Hiddink (also Dutch but Coach of Russia) has pulled off yet another remarkable achievement from a team which has been in the international backwaters for so long - just as he's previously done with both Australia and especially with South Korea.

Tomorrow night is Spain vs Italy - and to be honest I don't really care who wins out of them (preferrably Spain I guess - but I don't particularly like either team). Then it's on to the semi's: Germany vs Turkey and Russia vs Spain or Italy.

A Russia vs Turkey Final anyone? Certainly be more interesting than a Germany vs Italy one for a change!

I can't see Turkey lucking out a third time in a row, alas. Not against Ballack's boys.

I agree, Germany tend to start off weak in a tournament and then get increasingly better until they're in with a shout at winning the whole thign and people are wandering around wondering how on earth they got there AGAIN!

I think it'd be great for the game if we did have a Turkey vs Russia final as they are two teams that no one really expects to get there and it certainly makes a change from the usual assortment of Tournament Heavyweights making it through to the last couple of rounds (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Holland). I'd hate to see a Germnay vs Italy Final. Last time round with Portugal vs Greece it was interesting because neither team had ever won anything or appeared in a final.

I think another problem facing Turkey against Germany is the fact that they have a reduced squad to choose from due to injuries and/or suspensions. That's certainly not going to help matters at all.

Plus they could really do with scoring a goal before the 87th minute that takes them into the lead. I can't believe they've still only led for two minutes the entire tournament! :p
