-ist

You have racist, sexist, etc.

What is the -ist or word when you are perjudice against homosexuals?

I don't think it is homophobic as that is more of a fear of homosexuals, although I'm sure I've seen it also used in the same context as one would used a -ist or -ism.

It's homophobic. It has come to have both meanings.

I used to hate the term because it clearly means something different (fear of the familiar? fear of things that are the same as you?) but unfortunately common usage can lead to a word being accepted even if the etymology is idiotic. (I'm looking at you "organic".)

Same as Xenophobic then, fear and racism in one.

But this is the English language which really never has to make a great deal of sense when it comes to etymology ;p

"The American Heritage Dictionary (1992 edition) defines homophobia as "aversion to gay or homosexual people or their lifestyle or culture" and "behavior or an act based on this aversion." Other definitions identify homophobia as an irrational fear of homosexuality.

Heterosexism
Around the same time, heterosexism began to be used as a term analogous to sexism and racism, describing an ideological system that denies, denigrates, and stigmatizes any nonheterosexual form of behavior, identity, relationship, or community (Herek, 1990). Using the term heterosexism highlights the parallels between antigay sentiment and other forms of prejudice, such as racism, antisemitism, and sexism."

Mow I'm having problems with 'ist' suffix:

---------------------------------
What Does The Suffix -ist Mean?

The suffix -ist is a suffix which is added at the end of a noun which corresponds to those verbs which end in the suffix -ise (which is spelt in American English as the suffix -ize) or those nouns which end in the suffix -ism. The suffix -ist is used to denote a person who either practices something or a person who is concerned with something or a person who holds certain principles, doctrines, etc.

For example, a person who apologises is known as an apologist, a person who writes plays is known as a dramatist, a person who works on a machine is known as a machinist, a person who believes in realism is known as a realist, a person who believes in socialism is known as a socialist, a person who believes in capitalism is known as a capitalist and a person who believes in communism is known as a communist.

My understanding is that -ism denotes subscription to an ideology. On its most fundamental level, "racism" is belief in the concept of race, and that people can be broken down into different races or ethnicities, which for the most part they clearly can be, so in that sense most of us are racist.

But if one is a Botanist one is not prejudiced against botany.

It's the English language, it's a bit sensible-ist ;p

the suffix -ist does not denote prejudice per se, it denotes more something like supporting something (over other things), for instance you have communist, socialist, capitalist, fascist (supported of a social or communal idea, or of capital, or of the fasci - the structures at the basis of fascist ideals/society).

Sexist and racist basically mean that you are in favour of distinction between the sexes or races (and that one of them is superior to the others). In that respect if you wanted a word like that in relation to homosexuals you should have something like straightist.
