Highlander Blashphemy....

Just been going through the list of film releases for 2009 and amongst all the bloody remakes (next year really is the 'Year of the Remake') I stumbled across a remake of the original 1986 Highlander film!!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

The original was fantastic but the sequals were appalling - especially #3 which was basically a remake of the first film (well - pretty much same dialogue and scene layout). We don't need a remake!

Mind you we don't really need remkes of any of the following either (and this isn't the comprehensive list...):

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Capricorn One
Children of the Corn
Clash of the Titans
Conan
The Crazies
Escape From New York
Flash Gordon*
He-Man & The Masters of the Universe
The Long Good Friday
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Red Dawn
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Short Circuit
Suspiria
Friday the 13th

Mind you there are also some interesting new films coming out (Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman being one) and some good sequels or continuations of existings lines (including two new X-Men spinoffs , Cloverfield 2 and Transformers 2).

* = ok, I am keen on seeng a remake of Flash Gordon because I love pulp sci-fi :p

I'd actually like to see a remake of Clash of the Titans (in a less gay format) and Short Circuit.

Yeah year of the remakes is to some extent a sign of the times and partly a long term effect of the writer's strike on studio schedules.

Most of them I won't bother with.

The Highlander franchise is starting to feel a bit dead. I don't understand why they're doing a remake regardless (let us not even mention the fourth film for pissing all over the entire series).

Of the rest of the list:

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes - To be honest, I don't think this will suffer from a remake as there aren't too many people who know the original all that well.
Capricorn One - Actually not all that bad a candidate for a remake, although the original was definitely good anyway. Actually due in 2010 according to IMDB but may have been bumped forward. Actually there's a few films on this list that come up as 2010 on IMDB.
Children of the Corn - Why? I wasn't impressed with the original?
Clash of the Titans - I can see the logic and it might be nice and flash but how can you hope to replace Harryhausen with CGI?
Conan - Once again, I see the logic but how can anyone replace Arnie?
Escape From New York - Noooooooooo!
Flash Gordon - Depends on the approach they take with it and which material they go back to. I'm assuming this will go back to the source material and not be a remake of the one we all know and love.
He-Man & The Masters of the Universe - Considering what a joke the last attempt to make this into a film was, if it's done sensibly (as in, they don't try saving budget by putting most of the film in our world) then this could actually be quite a fun film.
The Long Good Friday - Like trying to remake Get Carter or the Italian Job... Oh, wait.
A Nightmare on Elm Street - Firstly, nobody can top Robert Englund, and secondly, it was a naff film anyway. Why remake it?
The Rocky Horror Picture Show - Considering how many people are perfectly happy to see this on stage done by different actors its curious that there should be any resistance to a remake. Nonetheless, I cannot possibly conceive of a film version of this without Tim Curry, Richard O'Brian and Meatloaf! Why!!!!?
Short Circuit - Number Five is... alive!? I suspect it will lose some of hjis charm once they've CGI'd him.
Friday the 13th - Why won't Freddy and Jason just die, already?

Dude...WTF is up with all the remakes? Why can't things be left well enough alone? Are we so devoid of imagination that we have to keep "re-imagining" things?

Except for He-Man...that was an abomination.

Sorry
- Clash of the Titans is being remade
- Conan: Red Nails is an animated film that has been in the works for quite a while but will hopefully never get finished.
- There was a rubbish Flash Gordon TV series but yes, if they could make a remake of the original serials in a sort of mix between Sky Captain and The Shadow, all based on the original comics, that could be cool.

Agreed with Conan. Although Arnie would be hard to replace I could see Ray Stevenson taking it on.

A shame it looks like Brett Ratner is at the helm. Might be ok though.

I always bristle when they remake Classics, so the idea of remaking Long Good Friday has caused a bit of a reaction, but I guess it will sink into the mists of time in the same way as every other rehashed version of films that should never be messed with.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes should also never be touched. It is one of those films that is so diabolically crap that it has become a work of genius.

I'm looking forward to Neverwhere - despite adoring the BBC "you can see the strings" original - but the one I'm really waiting for is the pretentious swoon fest that is Dorian Gray.

But I suppose I'm not really one to hold a lot of opinion on film - my facourite of this year was Mama Mia!

Flash Gordon and Highlander's soundtracks were both by Queen as well, either coincidental or it's a ploy by Nu-Queen to re-do the music ;p

They can't have Flash without Brian Blessed though, it just can't work!
