First RPGs I played

This year is the twentieth anniversary of 'Angus' Roleplaying Odyssey'. Little did I know on that warm August evening at my cousins in Washington State twenty years ago that I was about to start something that would pretty much dominate my life one way or another. I don't say dominate in a bad way either, I make a good living out of what is essentially still my hobby and its one of the most creative industries, and hobbies, that I've come across.

Anyway, my pending anniversary and a thread about old RPGs on another LJ users site got me thinking about the games I started with and how they compared with other peoples 'beginning steps'.

So, what were your first three RPGs and what year did you start playing?

Mine are:

Year: 1984
1. Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
2. Top Secret
3. MERP (ICE)

Did you use the original books (Chainmail, Eldritch Wizardry etc)? Those were the first we used - I'm not sure if that's Basic D&D or just D&D...

I still ahve some of those books too.

Newbie
I spoke to my mum and dad. They bought me Tunnels & Trolls in 1980, then I got basic D&D in 1982. The third RPG, not counting AD&D, was either MERP, like yourself or Dragon Warriors probaby in 85.

I made up my own roleplaying game as a very young kid. I think I was about 6 - so 1982. I do remember being very disappointed when I discovered this great new game wasn't new at all!

The system was simple; the more I liked the character (or StarWars toy, or lego monster creation) the more d6 (all I had) thus the more 6s (successes) it was likely to win.

I still remember Wicket the Ewok taking out both my At-At walkers and then all three of my Darth Vader figures.

Then I found the Fighting Fantasy books and thought it would be a great idea to liberate the concept from a book and its simple plot and wrote the highly original "Fighting Myth" rules (and "Fighting Legend" rules for my little brother so he could have a game of his own!).

Er, then it was,
a) Dragon Warriors
b) Warhammer
c) MERP (quickly dumped) for Paranoia.

(There you go - ask a simple question, get an essay)
